audioasis... - February 18, 2007

had a great time last night on kexp's audioasis live show. we want to thank james nixon (engineer) and hannah levin (our on-air audioasis host), and everyone on-hand at the kexp studio last night for giving us the love.

(support kexp - community supported radio at www.kexp.org)

played in a new band format last night w/ andy roth on drums, matt brown (trespassers william) on guitar, bill patton (bill patton and the credentials, the stares) on guitar, and don mcgreevy (SPOILS, the stares, bill patton and the credentials) on bass.

i've played with each of these musicans in the past, but never all together in this band format. they're each so talented, and they sounded great last night - and for some reason i still can't get over how righteous a time it is to play live with a band. i guess it's the element of surprise...the chance to play with and against other shapes and sounds...

and more weather. - November 6, 2006

well, despite the gusts and rain we had a great full house and a warm and inspiring crowd at the tractor last night for the cd release show. wanted to thank everyone for coming out to support the show, and also, our local press and radio for giving the show and album such great coverage.

our very talented photographer friend anita (www.anitanowacka.com and www.anitanowacka.blogspot.com) was on hand last night snapping shots, and we'll get some posted to the site soon...

thanks to all of you - we're off and running...

well, actually, first we're off to cupcake royale for some prize cupcakes.

weather. - October 21, 2006

On Tuesday, I drove out to Kent to pick up nine big boxes of Two Kinds of Weather. Fresh pressed CD's now line the walls of my study. They're making a nice impromptu desk - - but let's face it - - I'd prefer they fulfill their sonic destiny!

To that end, I'm mailing a bunch out on monday to cdbaby.com.
They should be available by the end of next week. So, if you're not in Seattle, and can't make it to the release party - you'll be able to order your disc pronto from cdbaby.com.

Andy's design work looks beautiful (thank you again, Andy Abero!) and we've got a tshirt design in the works as well.

I can't wait to get the CD out to you...

devolution. revolution. 33rpms. - July 15, 2006

bird stories. - February 19, 2006

dry sunny sunday in georgetown; red brick buildings levitating.

we finished recording the album today. no more mixing. no more tracking. so many good people's good hard work went into making this project fly.

next we'll map out a sequence for the songs. master. artwork. manufacture.

for now though, sunday night in a quiet house. the bird stories told.

the action trilogy. - February 1, 2006

With the recording project moving into it's final phases, it seemed time to get out and play a little!

So, February 10th, I'm off to Austin for the North American Folk Alliance conference. I first attended a NAFA conference 10 years ago - - and that strange road trip, across the prairies and up into Calgary, transformed itself into the song, "Buddha in My Frontseat." Who knows what'll happen this time...

February 25th brings a house concert date - one of my favorite ways to play.

And March 4th it's a songwriter-in-the-round show (one of my other favorite ways to play) at the fabulous Triple Door.

Check out concert dates, locations and line-ups on the Calendar page.

See you soon...

almost and next. - December 10, 2005

we'll be finishing up recording the last three songs next weekend. interesting process to record over a period of months. we grab dates where we can, call up our trusted lot of talented friends and get all into it for a couple days. then it could be a month or more before we see eachother again.

since we last worked, i've been to budapest and back, and perhaps of greater note - finally fulfilled my not so secret desire to cover a "bread" tune. wayne's been to portugal, ny, california. tim finished his "youngs" album. matt's got shiny new photos and some major real-estate on itunes and a new studio space in the works. so many threads...

record now. mix next. done almost.

robin. apple blossom. - September 24, 2005

for some reason, last week, out of nowhere - i blurted out the state bird of michigan. also the state flower (which is actually a fruit blossom?).

either way, the moment of sudden recall seemed an anomoly. most times i stare up into the sky, or down to the ground, wishing if only i knew the names of things. phylum, genus, species. plants, birds - - the named things.

anyway, thinking of my childhood home, michigan, means it's fall. and fall means we're finalizing schedules for finishing the album. a few more tracks to go. a small new song written at a bend in the river.

cross my fingers, we'll be mixing by january.

i'll keep you posted... hope you're all well.

also, please keep doing what you can for those affected by katrina.

backalley bottlerockets - June 28, 2005

Quick note to say - second round of recording dates are set for July 2, 3 and 4. Hoping the double-sound-proofed walls of the studio were built with the 4th of July in mind! When the recording is done, we'll see who can make out the firework bursts laid down into some percussion loops.

Excited to announce that this time out we'll be joined by guitar player/ engineer Matt Brown from the band, Trespassers Willam. Matt has a talent for creating rich, textured landscapes of sound on electric guitar. Check out his band's beautiful tunes by visiting the "links" page.

Word of the day: snap, crackle, pop.

actions accumulated - June 20, 2005

let's agree not to ask what took so long. by now that's oh so long a story, and all about the past. instead, let's start here on a sun bleached day in june 2005. the mountain is out...

and i'm excited to announce i'm back in the studio working on a recording of new songs.

we're recording in various configurations; various studios. june 2 and 3 found us in the lovely flora studios over at tucker martine's place. now we're headed over to jonathan kingham's studio for some more recording in the coming weeks.

check back for updates on the recording project; and news about possible house concerts...

word of the day, people, is: ontario.
